Greetings from A Place for Books!
We’re a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing books, educational materials, and internet infrastructure to the children and residents of rural Uganda. Follow the links below to learn more about our vision, mission, guiding principles & procedures, to get information about the members of our team, to find out how to get in touch with us, and to discover how you can help make our vision of easy access to information a reality for everyone!
Dear Rafiki,
8 years ago I moved to a wonderful country, with long winters and hot summers. Little did I know, this country would soon become my second home. Moving to Canada from Uganda on my own as an international student was ironically a very easy and light decision, made with little thought on my part. I didn’t spend too much time picking a university or researching what I would need to survive the snow. As an African I knew that when you get such an opportunity you don’t think about it or ask questions, you just go!
What fascinated me the most about living in Canada was having access to so much information. I could find every book I needed for school in the library, I had free internet on campus and could google every North American-centric phrase that was foreign to me. This type of “information opulence” was so normal to everyone here that within time it soon became normal to me. That was, until I went back home.
In June of 2012 I embarked on my most impactful journey thus far, I joined the Global Health Corps – A 1 year professional fellowship that aims to address health inequities using a global partnership model. I was partnered with an American professional peer and the two of us were placed in rural western Uganda working with an international organization on a public health program. Our role blessed us with frequent interaction and work with the local community of which I was proudly from. I learnt so many important and necessary life lessons that year but one thing that caught a hold of my heart was just how impressive and eager to learn everyone was! I was surrounded with rural Ugandans full of ingenuity, intelligence and most of all eagerness to learn more! I was looking in the mirror, this was me 7 years ago so I knew that this feeling would not loosen its grip of my heart. I started asking myself, how could I use my privilege to try and address this gap of lack of access to information that in turn can cause a terrible cycle of de-motivation within our youth, drop outs in our school children, uninformed decision making in our leaders and so much more.
Chimamnda Adichie speaks about this feeling of how reading a book provided her with a lens view into the foreign interesting and intriguing world of the other. As a child in East Africa reading books taught me so much; I learnt about the west african – kola nut from Chinua Achebe’s stories; I learnt about “tree houses” from Nancy Drew books and before I even knew what snow was; I learnt about the Canadian prairies from my dad’s random geographic magazines.
Like me, many of us Africans are highly motivated and want to learn but just need the tools to do so. This is not a false story of providing aid to the poor desolate Africans. This is a story of giving tools to the literate, educated people in rural Uganda simply because we here have Kindles, iPads and definitely more than we need. If I could, I would start a book cycle going both ways so we can both learn from each other… But for now, let’s do what we can and send some books to those who will read them, love them and dream from them!
In solidarity, Viv.

Philosophy
Our mission is to create a sustainable, permanent system where donated books, magazines, literature are recycled and used to the benefit of forming libraries in rural areas in Uganda. We hope to address an access to information issue to those without and encourage a spirit of philanthropy, recycling and global awareness to those with.
Our vision is to foster a system and capacity to develop libraries full of: books, magazines, literature that readers can both self identify with, be exposed to and learn about what they identify with as their own plus different people and places that are foreign to them. We strive very hard to encourage both local and foreign donors that can help us propagate this vision.
-
Empowerment for all – We feel empowered by libraries and all they offer. We want everyone to have the option to have that feeling. Simple.
-
Equality – We want you to send us all the literature that you can because you and I can pick what to read and what not to read. We believe our beneficiaries have the intelligence and should have the freedom to pick what they would like to read. We are all equals. Simple.
-
Environmental Impact – We care about the environment, we recycle. We know majority of the western world is moving towards electronic books so we want you to recycle too. Land fills full of books are unnecessary when there are myriads of people who can benefit from your books.
-
Pretty simple, no?
-
Efficiency – We strive to make it easy for anyone to drop off, collect and ship books, even with limited resources, you can still have a huge impact! We as Torontonians know how difficult it is to recycle your books, We mean all your books not just the new, clean, relevant ones. Again we want ALL your literature!
-
Community involvement – We believe in UBUNTU. We are products of our community and are proud of the strength of community. We foster local, grass-roots participation to collect, sort, pack and ship books from Canada and to set up, promote and run libraries in Africa. Love & Passion – Enough said.
Operations
A Place For Books aims to be as transparent as possible, all of our proposals in their entirety can be found in our Projects page. We work on a project by project basis depending on interest and our capacity, however, books are collected on a rolling basis and delivered semi-annually to a storage facility in Uganda. Please see the “Projects” section for more details on specific projects being worked on right now!
-
We accept literature on EVERYTHING and from EVERYONE*. Our beneficiaries are very capable of deciphering for themselves what is/is not of use to them. Literature is collected from donation points, from communities who engaged in a book drive and arrangements can also be made to drop off at convenient meeting points. Support can be provided to individuals or groups looking to have a successful book drive through a manual available through us (adapted from the African villages project)
-
Simultaneously, our team in Uganda accepts statements of need from town council representatives that have the necessary infrastructure and support available to put together a library in their rural town, if necessary, a site visit will be made to ensure that the need is legitimate.
-
Using donations and support from you we collect and ship literature semi-annually by ship. Transport of literature is handled by Freightcom.
-
Once the literature arrives in Uganda, combined with the locally donated pieces. it is driven to the prospective library and with the help of volunteers and community members – a library is formed! Representatives from ” A place for books” sit with community leaders/representatives and brainstorm ideas on how to maintain sustainability. If it is a new venture, we provide a manual on how to set up and run a library. We also provide limited (mainly simple online modules) training and follow up to evaluate how each project is running encouraging good library practices. See “Project Evaluation” for more information on our evaluation process.
*Examples of categories of books that we accept are:

The team from “A Place For Books” is very proud of every Library that we manage to support and take pride in visiting the libraries after they have been finalized. Specifically we look to evaluate the following:
-
Is the Library being used? Is it being under/over used? Does it need more books? or can we afford to transfer the over stock? We look at daily sign in sheets and monthly reports drafted by the librarian.
-
Is the Library well maintained? We visually look at not only the books but the infrastructure as well.
-
What is the communities’ general impression of the library? We conduct formal/informal interviews with community members and receive honest feedback. To avoid responder bias we may ask non team members to conduct this analysis for us.
-
Any other issues being experienced? Are they receiving the support they need?

Featured Project
Ibanda Town Council Library
Ibanda Town council is a lower local government of Ibanda District Local Government located in the western Region along Mbarara Ibanda Kamwenge Road. This Town council started in 1994 under Mbarara District and is mandated to deliver services to people of Ibanda Town council and Uganda at large. Such services like education, health, improved road networks, safe water supply, Library services etc
Ibanda Town Council started providing public library services in 1998 by renting premises and with few books. It had thought of constructing public library but due to limited funds it ended up renting the premises.
The main aim of this project is to improve public library services by stocking appropriate books and modern furniture.
The motivation to write this project proposal stemmed from the fact that the available services have not been enough to accommodate the increasing number of readers in our current library.
The major objective stated in this proposal will be realized through adding more books to the library which are appropriate to all categories and if possible constructing a standard public library and stocking it with all requirements. The outputs will hence provide the achievement of the project goal or aim of improving public library services and the government’s policy of openness and encouraging institutions of government to have public library for data management, research and reading for general knowledge.
We wish to request funds to be used to have our current public library furnished with furniture’s & fittings, data bank/computer and transport expenses.
